Newark Valley Students Compete at SUNY Cobleskill Agriculture Day

On Sept. 27, 28 Newark Valley High School students took part in SUNY Cobleskill's Agriculture High School Day. They competed in various events and learned about careers in the agriculture industry. This annual event has been a favorite for Newark Valley students since 2017.

Students tested their skills in events like operating heavy machinery, driving tractors, fixing small engines, and judging dairy cattle and livestock. Some students even competed in wildlife identification and equine (horse) judging. These events helped students gain hands-on experience in different areas of agriculture.

In the Construction Equipment Contest, students used machines like skid steers and excavators to complete obstacle courses. The Tractor Driving Contest challenged them to safely operate tractors and trailers, while the Small Engine Troubleshooting Contest focused on engine repair skills.

In the Animal Science events, students judged dairy cattle and livestock, learning how to evaluate different breeds. Others took part in contests like Wildlife Identification, which involved recognizing fish and animals common to New York.

The day also included visits to on-campus locations like the Industry Expo, where businesses showed off new agricultural tools and equipment. Students toured the Meat Processing Lab, learning about how meat is prepared and processed.

By attending this event, Newark Valley students were able to explore future career options in agriculture and see what SUNY Cobleskill has to offer. This experience helps them grow their skills and interests in the agriculture field while competing against students from other schools.

Newark Valley Interact Club Collecting Donations in Place of Homecoming Game Ticket Sales

This Saturday’s Homecoming Game will be about more than just football—it will be an opportunity to give back to our local community and those in need. In lieu of ticket sales, the Newark Valley Interact Club will be collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations at the game.

All non-perishable food donations will go directly to the Newark Valley and Berkshire food pantries, which provide essential services to families in our area. The need for support continues to grow, and this is a great way for our community to come together and help ensure that no family goes without.

In addition to supporting local food pantries, cash donations collected at the game will be split between the pantries and relief efforts for those impacted by Hurricane Helene. The hurricane has left many families struggling, and every donation will help provide much-needed aid to those affected by the disaster.

We encourage everyone attending the Homecoming Game to bring a donation—whether it’s a can of food, a box of pasta, or a cash contribution. Together, we can make a significant impact, both locally and globally.

When: Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
Where: Newark Valley High School Stadium
What to Bring: Non-perishable food items or a cash donation

Let’s show our Cardinal Pride both on and off the field! By coming together as a community, we can make a difference in the lives of so many.
