A message from Superintendent Calice regarding winter weather advisory and school closure guidelines

Winter Weather Advisory and School Closure Guidelines 2023-2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the chill of winter approaches, it’s important that we address the potential impact of winter weather on our school schedule. The safety of our students and staff is our utmost priority, and we strive to make decisions about school delays and closures with careful consideration and timely communication.

Weather-Related Delays and Closures: The Decision-Making Process
Our team closely monitors current and forecasted conditions to assess the safety of travel. Factors such as the effectiveness of snow removal on school properties and the condition of local roads play a crucial role in our decision. We collaborate with neighboring districts, governmental authorities, and weather experts to ensure we have comprehensive information to make the best decision.

Delayed Start Times
In the event of a delay, school start times will be pushed back by two hours from the normal schedule.

Two Hour Delay Start Times per building:
NTH -                          10:50 a.m. (No breakfast will be served)
Middle School -           9:30 a.m.
High School -              9:55 a.m.

School Closures
We are guided by National Weather Service advisories regarding wind chill factors. A forecasted sustained wind chill of -30 degrees Fahrenheit or an actual sustained wind chill of -15 degrees Fahrenheit between our identified travel times will necessitate school closure.

Notification Procedures
We aim to notify families of any changes prior to 6:00 a.m. on the affected day. In severe conditions, we may make this call between 6:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. the evening before. If the district moves from a delay to a closing we will notify families prior to 8:00 a.m. Please stay alert to communications via local media (WBNG), automated calls, push notifications to the NVCS App, and updates on the district’s website and Facebook/ Instagram pages.

Cancellation of Activities
When schools are closed, all after-school activities and meetings are canceled, except for essential board meetings. All school facilities are closed to the public.

Flexibility for Families
We understand that weather conditions can vary greatly within our district. If you believe that travel is too hazardous for your student(s), you may opt to keep them at home. Notify your student’s school that they will be staying home that day.

Winter Weather Safety Education
We encourage you to discuss winter weather safety with your children, especially those who walk to school, or wait outside for the bus, to ensure they are prepared for any inclement conditions.

Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe during the winter season. Here’s to hoping for a mild winter, but rest assured, we are prepared to act in the best interest of our students and staff should severe weather occur.

Warm regards,

Timothy Calice
Superintendent of Schools
