FFA Students Participate in Agricultural Literacy Week at Elementary School

Pumpkin plant sprouts
Each year, New York Agriculture in the Classroom puts on Agricultural Literacy Week, a week of learning where volunteers throughout the state read a book with an agricultural theme to elementary students, with a focus on second grade classrooms.

The Newark Valley FFA Club participates in the program every year. This year, students Shaine Anguish, Destiny Jensen, Cadence Payne, Peyton Rhodes and Ella Klingle visited Nathan T. Hall Elementary School to read "The Pie That Molly Grew" to the second graders. The book focuses on the agricultural process of growing a pumpkin from a single seed. The students then did an activity that involved planting their own pumpkin seeds, and then they will watch it grow over time. This activity had to goal of increasing agricultural awareness in elementary school students.
