On the morning of May 13, 2015, the Newark Valley school community lost a cherished friend, teacher, coach and leader with the passing of Ms. Sharon Mullins.
When one dedicates their life to the growth and development of children, the impact that person can have over the course of 27 years is difficult to overstate. In Sharon’s case, it is virtually impossible to overstate. In every way, shape, and form, Sharon epitomized what it means to be student-centered. It was evident every day in how hard she worked, the decisions she made, the conversations she would engage in, the expectations she held for those around her, and the incredible amount of time she spent at school events.
What really set Sharon apart, however, was her unrestrained selflessness. Many of her most important contributions were never attributed to her- and that is how she wanted it. Sharon never craved attention, always sought to give others credit, and constantly elevated the needs of others above her own. She demonstrated, in the truest sense, service leadership.
It is unrealistic to try to capture the true magnitude of her presence in this brief writing. It is equally futile to try to describe the sense of loss we feel in our school family. We do, however, know how to move forward.
