Recently, a group of 12 sixth and seventh-grade girls from Newark Valley had the opportunity to visit Lockheed Martin for Women in Engineering Day. The event offered a glimpse into the world of engineering and hands-on experience with advanced technologies used by the aerospace company.
The day began with an interactive session on circuits, where students learned about electrical engineering through activities like creating circuits that emitted sound, lit up, or responded to changes in light or sound levels. The session, led by an inspiring speaker, highlighted the creativity and problem-solving involved in electrical engineering.
The students then explored the Innovation Garage, a space designed to encourage employees to “Never give up your daydreams.” Here, the girls coded Ozobots and tried their hand at the F-16 fighter jet flight simulator. They learned about innovative tools such as laser engravers and 3D printers, while discussing the importance of thinking outside the box.
During lunch, a keynote speaker shared her career journey, which included engineering and earning a helicopter pilot’s license. Her story showcased the diverse paths within the engineering field. The highlight for many students was the chance to fly a helicopter simulator, navigating over a virtual Washington, D.C., and testing missile controls. The speaker emphasized the critical nature of programming accuracy, as these systems often involve life-saving operations.
The group also toured the Hawk’s Nest, a secure hangar where helicopters are built for major contracts. Students observed several helicopters in various stages of assembly and saw testing areas for specialized equipment.
The day ended with a problem-solving challenge: building a catapult using provided materials. Students competed to launch their object the farthest, demonstrating creativity and teamwork.
The students returned to Newark Valley inspired and excited about potential careers in engineering and computer science. The school district extends its thanks to Lockheed Martin for hosting this engaging and educational event.
