About the GBSC
How It Works

In the Greater Binghamton Scholastic Challenge, students create and develop a business idea as part of a team and compete against other student teams from the Binghamton area. Students have plenty of help along the way—including business plan templates, learning modules, school advisors, and mentors from Binghamton-based Modern Marketing Concepts (which founded the GBSC and is owned by a local entrepreneur).

The GBSC offers students the chance to win scholarship money for college or for expanding their businesses. it’s also a great experience to list on college or job applications. We encourage team members to work to their strengths—such as idea generation, marketing, public speaking, writing, or finance. Students also work with local entrepreneurs and learn how to develop business presentations for evaluation by area businesspeople.

Background

The first GBSC was held during the 2010–2011 school year. Dan Babcock, chief executive officer and founder of Modern Marketing Concepts, briefly explains why his company started and sponsors the competition: “The Southern Tier’s future depends on innovation, and these students will help our community reach its full potential.”

Newark Valley's team, coached by Ms. Alexander, took 1st place in the GBSC!
