:: The College Application Process ::

::The College Application::
-Get applications from colleges early.  SUNY and some private college applications are available in the guidance office or can be downloaded off the web.

-Read through all of the application material before you fill out any information.  Make copies for practice.

-Be aware of application deadlines.

-Be sure your application is neat... typed or printed with black ink.

-Submit your completed application to your counselor with the application fee (or waiver) and envelope at least one week prior to the deadline.  The guidance office will mail the application with your official transcript.

-If you apply online you must bring a written request to the Guidance Office with the name and address of the college so that an official transcript can be mailed.

::The Application Essay::
-The essay can be one of the most important items on the college application.  Through the essay, the student has the opportunity to convey to admissions personnel the things that are most important  to him or herself.  The best essays are not only well written but present what are often ordinary events from an unusual perspective.

-Use the writing process:  brainstorm, rough-draft, re-write, re-write...

-Have an English instructor critique your essay.

-Try to characterize yourself as someone special or unique.

::Recommendations::
-Colleges often require that you submit one or more recommendations with your application.

-Request recommendations early and provide each person with a a copy of your resume/activity sheet, and a deadline sheet.  Be sure to allow ample time and don't make last minute requests.

-Ask each person to return the finished recommendation to your counselor to be included with your application and be mailed.
